Luxembourg joins PURL initiative to buy U.S. weapons for Ukraine

Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden announces that his country will take part in the PURL initiative to purchase weapons from the United States for transfer to Ukraine

He made the statement at a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Suspilne reports.

“This means that, together with other countries that we have yet to determine, we will finance a package of already available weapons, largely American-made, which we will provide to Ukraine. And, of course, over the next few weeks, we will identify other countries that are ready to do this with us,” Frieden said.

He noted that the aid package under this initiative is valued at $500 million, so Luxembourg will need allies to complete the purchase.

The Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) is a new mechanism for providing aid to Kyiv initiated by NATO. It stipulates that, in accordance with Ukrainian requests, a priority list of weapons and ammunition will be formed and approved by NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, while funding will be provided by Alliance states or partners.
