“In my role as prime minister, I will be Ukraine’s greatest friend, following in Boris Johnson’s footsteps, and fully committed to ensuring that Putin fails in Ukraine and suffers a strategic defeat and Russia is limited in the future,” the statement said.
She added that “this is not the time to talk about concessions and compromises to a terrifying dictator”: “I am a candidate that the British people can trust with regard to Ukraine, and whom they can trust to protect our freedom at any moment: at home and abroad.”
Truss is vying for the new prime minister with former finance minister Rishi Sunak in a leadership race that has been marked by clashes over the timing of tax cuts as well as more personal attacks.
Truss leads the polls among members of the Conservative Party who will ultimately decide who will be the next UK prime minister after weeks of voting on 5 September.
