Lithuanian MFA: Russians Should Be Asked About Their Views on Crimea in Order to Enter EU

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Gabrielius Landsbergis, has said that if the European Union fails to impose a visa ban on Russians, the neighbouring countries of Russian should implement their own rules.

The Minister said that they should start filtering travellers from Russia and suggested that this gets done by asking Russians applying for Schengen visas about their views on Crimea, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

The Minister recommended that Russians get asked whether they support the war in Ukraine and whether they believe Crimea belongs to Ukraine or Russia. Additionally, he said that if a Russian says that they believe that Crimea is part of Russia, they should not be permitted entry.

“If a person crossing the Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Finnish, or Polish border [from Russia] says that he or she thinks that Crimea is not occupied, we can assume that allowing this person in is not in line with our national security interests,” the Minister told reporters.

Lithuania is already considering proposing a regional-level ban on citizens of Russia if the European Union fails to reach an agreement on the matter.

The Foreign Minister said that Lithuania is waiting for a solution from the EU. However, he pointed out that if no solution is provided, Lithuania might look for a regional solution with the Baltic states, Poland, and Finland.

Lithuania is one of the first countries that decided to restrict the issuance of Schengen visas for Russians. In February, the Lithuanian authorities said that the country had decided to no longer issue visas for Russians.

Except for Lithuania, Estonia has also stopped issuing visas for citizens of Russia. Furthermore, Estonia has also banned entry for Russians who hold a Schengen visa issued by the Estonian authorities. Besides deciding to no longer issue visas and banning entry to Russian citizens, Estonia is also considering not permitting entry even to those who hold Schengen visas issued by other countries.

Other countries such as Finland, Denmark, Poland, and the Czech Republic also support an entry ban on Russians.

Nonetheless, not all EU countries hold the same views. Additional member states have said that they do not support the idea of introducing an entry banning and stopping the Schengen visa issuance for Russians.

Portugal, Cyprus, and Greece are just some of the countries that have opposed an entry ban on Russians.

The German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, as well as the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, have also opposed such a proposal.

  1. 200 Russian paratroopers killed this morning in Stachanov….Donbas. Their hotel was visited by 2 Himar missiles.

  2. The fact that this conversation is even taking place while RuZZia is inflicting genocide, rape, kidnapping and torture on Ukrainians tells us exactly what sort of a shithouse that the EU is.
NO RuZZianz should be allowed in any civilised, decent country* unless they can demonstrate a long track record of opposition to putinaziism.

*Unfortunately there are only a tiny handful of these in the world.
    Let us remember forever all the putlerite countries with loathing and contempt;
The BRICS, Hungary, Austria, Syria, Iran, Cuba, Nicaragua, Argentina, Armenia, Belarus, Pakistan and countless squalid African dictatorships.
Even worse than the above : those who feign support for Ukraine but actually belong to putler : France, Germany, Italy.

    • Yes.
For some reason I feel more hatred towards Scholz types than even Putler.
I mean, Putler is just a mentally ill person. Being mad at him is like being mad at someone with down syndrome for not becoming a professor. My dad could have been a Putin: I can be mad at him for not feeling any empathy, but he just does not have that feature in his brain.

Of course I want Putin dead because of all the suffering he causes, but to be mad at him is just a waste of mental energy. You can torture Putin as much as you want (we should!) and he would behave because of fear, but not because he changed as a person, nor will he feel any regret.

But Scholz has the mental capacities, access to information and people around him that allow him to make decisions that are morally right. Still he chooses deliberately to make the wrong choices. It would be useful to hit Scholz in the face and break his teeth and shoot him in the kneecaps and show him what Putin is doing in Ukraine as there is still some humanity in, but Putin is a lost cause.

  3. This won’t work, russians lie too much. Better to ask them if they think russia is a nazi state. If they say no, refuse them entry for lying or being stupid. If they say yes, refuse them entry anyway.
