Western media are actively discussing the start of the summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska .

Reuters writes that “Trump and Putin greeted each other like old friends; to say their reception was warm would be almost an understatement.”

“So far, the body language at the summit has been anything but cold. As Putin approached Trump on the red carpet, the US president applauded several times, welcoming him to US soil for the first time in 10 years. They shook hands and walked together to Trump’s limousine. Later, as they sat down at the negotiating table, Trump and Putin exchanged smiles,” the  CNN article says . 

It is noted that Putin is known for expressing his attitude through his posture. Former US presidents have noted his habit of slouching during meetings, which was a sign of his disinterest, but in Alaska he did not slouch. CNN adds:

“A smiling Vladimir Putin peered out of the window of President Donald Trump’s armored limousine as they drove past a row of cameras at an Alaskan airstrip.”

The New York Times notes that Trump gave Putin a host of welcoming events – a military flyover, a red carpet, a presidential handshake, and a ride in his presidential limousine. Trump even applauded Putin as he approached him on the red carpet.

NBC News compared and called “completely different” Donald Trump’s greetings to dictator Putin and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky. 

According to NBC, Putin’s “warm” greeting stands in stark contrast to the spat with Zelensky in the White House over the winter, when Trump and Vice President Vance criticized Zelensky for “not showing due respect.”
