The leader of Russian volunteers fighting for the Ukrainian Armed Forces explained how ordinary Russians view the Kremlin and the war, and why we should not seek innocent victims of propaganda among them, in an interview with NV on June 28.
The responsibility for the war unleashed by the Kremlin against Ukraine lies with all of Russian society, regardless of the level of involvement of individual citizens, according to an officer with the call sign Fortuna, chief of staff of the Russian Volunteer Corps (RDC), a unit of Russian citizens fighting alongside Ukraine’s Armed Forces.
“I support the idea that absolutely everyone is to blame,” Fortuna said in an interview with NV. “Some are fighting directly, some work at military facilities, others make decisions or sign documents. There are those who pay taxes and pretend that nothing is happening. The degree of guilt varies, but everyone has it.”
Fortuna, who serves as the RDC’s chief of staff, said that despite heavy losses, the growing number of homeless people in military uniforms, and the fading excitement surrounding earnings from the war, many Russians are still willing to fight at the front.
Fortuna also addressed rumors that Vladimir Putin may be grooming a successor, including his own daughter. He stated that Russian society would accept any leadership option so long as it does not disrupt their lives.
“Most people live in poverty and are completely under state control,” Fortuna said. “They are only concerned with surviving from paycheck to paycheck and avoiding prison. They don’t care who is in charge. I think Putin will stay until the very end — there are simply no other options.”

When asked about the Russian Volunteer Corps’s (RDC’s) plans for the future if Putin remains in power, Fortuna emphasized the corps’ focus on continuous development and capability-building.
“Only forward movement allows us to succeed,” he said.
