MOSCOW – A lawyer for the recently deceased Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny has been arrested. Vasily Dubkov, who accompanied Navalny’s mother last week when she demanded the release of her son’s body from authorities, has been arrested in Moscow, Russian news media report.
According to sources from the news site Novaya Gazeta Europe, Dubkov is accused of “breach of public order.” He is currently being held at the Shcherbinka police station, SOTA reports .
Navalny died on February 16 under suspicious circumstances in a penal colony. His remains were only handed over to the family a few days ago.
A spokesman for the late Russian opposition leader’s team also said on Tuesday that a place has still not been found to bury Navalny. “Some locations say they are busy, other locations refuse when we mention the name ‘Navalny’. In one place we were told directly that funeral companies are prohibited from working with us.”
Call
Leonid Volkov, a close ally of Navalny, is calling on Russians to protest en masse against President Vladimir Putin ahead of next month’s elections. He thus repeats the call that Navalny made just before his death.
In a post on social media on February 1, Navalny called on the population to protest by going to the polls at the same time on March 17 at noon. Volkov calls the call in a YouTube video Navalny’s “political testament.”
“People will thus fulfill Alexei Navalny’s last will, so this is very important. Do it. And in the time leading up to the elections, convince as many people as possible to do this.”
The Kremlin warns that there will be legal consequences for anyone who responds to what it calls a “provocative” call.
