Launching “openers”: the Armed Forces of Ukraine spoke about the new tactics of the occupiers near Chasovy Yar

20.12.2025

Russian troops changed their tactics in the Chasovye Yar area, relying on the massive use of individual infantry. Instead of assault groups, the occupiers began sending so-called “openers” to the positions.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine are recording significant enemy losses and a drop in the motivation of its personnel. This was stated by Ivan Petrychak, head of the communications department of the 24th separate mechanized brigade named after King Danylo.

According to him, the Defense Forces are observing a change in the tactics of the Russian army near Chasovy Yar. If earlier the enemy operated in assault groups of 3-5 people with the support of equipment, now it massively uses single infantrymen, whom the Armed Forces of Ukraine call “openers.”

Russian troops are moving through fog, snow, and rain, trying to avoid detection by Ukrainian drones. Their task is to scout landing sites, shelters, and dugouts for subsequent artillery strikes.

The Russian army in this area loses about 100 soldiers per week, which corresponds to the size of a company. In a month, losses reach the level of a battalion – about 400 people, most of whom are irretrievable.

The Ukrainian military also notes a sharp drop in motivation among Russian personnel. While previously there were cases of suicide to avoid capture, now the situation is the opposite – the number of prisoners over the past month has exceeded last year’s figures.

According to Petrychak, Russian recruits fight for an average of a month and a half from the moment of training to reaching the front line, and they spend from several days to a month directly in combat. The level of training and motivation has significantly decreased.

The military also spoke about the so-called death capsules found on Russian prisoners. These are homemade tokens with personal data that the occupiers carry with them, understanding that they may not return from battle.

The 24th separate mechanized brigade continues to restrain the advance of Russian troops on the eastern approaches to Kostyantynivka. According to Petrychak, the enemy is actively using guided bombs, artillery, and FPV drones, relying on massive strikes on Chasovy Yar, Kostyantynivka, and logistical routes, but is suffering significant losses even despite difficult weather conditions.

As OBOZ.UA reported, in eastern Ukraine, the concentration of Russian forces in the Chasovy Yar area continues, although there are currently no active assaults. At the same time, the occupiers are actively building a logistics network. They are transferring personnel and ammunition, preparing for a possible intensification of offensive actions.
