Putin launched this war to make Russia feared again, but the fear has moved back into Moscow as the Kremlin reportedly tightens security around its own ruler. OCCRP and Important Stories say a European intelligence report describes Kremlin high alert since early March over a possible plot against Putin, including a drone threat scenario involving Russia’s own elite.

Red Square is supposed to project command on Victory Day, yet this year the armor is gone while checkpoints guard Moscow and armed positions watch the Kremlin walls. Ukraine’s deep strikes have pulled Russia’s rear into the war, exposing refineries, defense factories, airfields, and the capital’s security zone Putin promised would remain untouchable.

For Russia’s elite, the issue is no longer only whether the front can be held, but whether Putin can still protect the system around him. Loyalty was supposed to buy property, safety, immunity, and access, while insiders now watch asset seizures, prosecutions, exposed families abroad, and extraordinary security at the palace. If Moscow needs protection, the palace needs protection, and Putin needs protection, loyalty becomes a calculation inside the regime itself.
