Moscow came under the largest drone attack on the capital of the war while Russia was still voting, yet residents reported no normal air-raid sirens or SMS warnings. The Moscow refinery was hit, more than 400 flights were disrupted, and mobile networks were restricted as the Kremlin closed an election meant to display order and control.
Jason Smart examines what the attack revealed about the limits of that control, from Moscow’s air defenses and election machinery to military reporting and fears of another mobilization. United Russia emerged with nearly 58% of the party-list vote while refinery strikes, fuel pressure, travel disruption, and battlefield setbacks were bringing the cost of the war deeper into everyday life.
Political discipline remains powerful inside Russian institutions, but repeated drone strikes and growing economic pressure are creating problems that cannot be fixed through controlled elections or reassuring television reports. What happened over Moscow exposed the widening distance between the image presented from above and conditions people increasingly experience for themselves.
