Kovalenko: the critical moment with air defense has already arrived, tanks and armored vehicles are next. Analysis of losses of Russian occupiers in Ukraine for the month

2.09.2024 – Translated from Ukrainian via Google and OFP

In August 2024, Russian occupation forces maintained the trend of increasing losses – both in personnel and equipment – with new records being set. Moreover, in those categories that have been the main ones in this indicator for several months. On the other hand, there is a decrease in losses in categories where the ROV is experiencing problems with production/recovery.

More details about this can be found in the material of the joint project of OBOZ.UA and the group “Information Resistance” .

Losses of personnel

In August, the Russian occupation contingent, just like in June and July, suffered not a record, but the second highest number of losses – 36,810.

This indicator is the result of the continuing high intensity of combat operations by the ROV exclusively by the infantry component, to which an additional element is added the shortage of assault armored vehicles, and in fact, their absence.

Thus, for the fourth month in a row in 2024, the losses of personnel among the occupation forces exceed 35 thousand people.

Tank losses

In August, the Russian occupiers lost 193 tanks. This is a low figure, but it is not due to the fact that the Ukrainian Defense Forces have become worse at working against Russian main battle tanks (MBT), but because there are fewer Russian tanks along the line of combat.

The Russian command continues to adhere to the strategy of saving and minimizing the use of MBTs during assault operations, which is associated with the growing deficit of their supplies to the combat zone. And this trend has been continuing since May. The Russian military-industrial complex does not have the ability to correct the situation. And will not have the ability.

Losses of armored combat vehicles

The losses of the Russian occupation forces’ armored fighting vehicles in August amounted to 557 units. As with tanks, the decrease in these figures is due to the reduction in deliveries and the growing shortage of armored vehicles in the combat zone.

Even despite the intensification of offensive actions in August, the use of AFVs by the enemy was not intensified, but remained at a level even lower than in July or June. That is, the situation with compensation for losses is even worse than could have been expected.

Losses of barrel artillery

The losses of barrel artillery in the army of the occupiers amounted to just a few units, 1,517 – almost an absolute record for August.

Let me remind you that the previous record for the entire period of a full-scale war was set in July – 1520 (before that in June – 1415, and even earlier in May – 1160).

I would like to draw attention to the fact that losses of barrel artillery do not mean the complete destruction of the artillery system, but in most cases damage and its removal from combat readiness, but at the same time maintaining its repairability.

Nevertheless, the loss rate of barrel artillery is the undisputed leader among all other categories. It would be even better if our partners supplied both ammunition and artillery systems to Ukraine in much larger quantities. But for now we have what we have.

MLRS losses

In August, losses of multiple launch rocket systems among Russian occupation forces increased somewhat, although they did not reach a record level – 44.

After a fairly long period of failure in the loss rate, the MLRS systems returned to a certain average level due to the fact that the number of “homunculi” – a combination of a different type of chassis with a MLRS launcher designed for a completely different carrier – increased in the combat zone. For example, a cross between the RBU-6000 naval MLRS and the BMP-1 or MT-LB chassis.

Air defense losses

During August, Russian occupiers lost 33 air defense systems.

A normal, average indicator. Nothing new. But it is important to understand that air defense is precisely the category that has long been experiencing a critical shortage of equipment.

Losses of vehicles

In August, the ROV almost set another record for losses of motor transport, they were just a little short. In the end – 2065.

The absolute record was set in July 2103.

The situation with motor transport in the ROV has not changed, most of the means are not used for their direct functionality on the line of combat clashes. It is motor transport that they try to compensate for the lack of armored vehicles. That is, this category will continue to show growth with all the ensuing consequences.

Losses of special equipment

In August, the special equipment category set an absolute record – 278.

The growth of losses of special equipment at the ROV has been recorded since the beginning of 2024, and three absolute records of losses in this category were noted in the first half of the year. The summer of 2024 was the most intense.

Conclusions

In August, both absolute records for ROV losses were set, as well as results that were as close as possible to records in categories that were expected and should have remained so.

The Command of the Defense Forces of Ukraine, continuing the defense strategy, is achieving the main goal of the 2024 campaign – the exhaustion of the Russian occupation forces, which should bring them to the point of losing their offensive and defensive capabilities.

Today, we can already say that the Russian occupiers are reducing the use of MBTs and AFVs in the combat zone. Given the current indicators, the critical moment for the occupation forces in the use of tanks and combat armored vehicles may come earlier than 2025 – already in 2024. At the same time, in the category of air defense systems, this moment has already come a long time ago.

The demilitarization and denazification of the Russian army is proceeding strictly according to plan.

  1. “The Command of the Defense Forces of Ukraine, continuing the defense strategy, is achieving the main goal of the 2024 campaign – the exhaustion of the Russian occupation forces, which should bring them to the point of losing their offensive and defensive capabilities.”

The cockroaches have no other methodology than death and destruction, this also goes for the way they conduct battles, in which it’s perfectly acceptable to lose lots of meat puppets and material for a few yards of burned land. Ukraine is doing well eroding mafia land’s military, bit by bit.
