Trump is trying to “create a strong structure for peace,” his special envoy said.
The US President’s Special Representative for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, admitted that the US is using not only “incentives” but also “pressure points” to make Ukraine committed to peace talks. According to him, this is an agreement on mineral resources. He made the corresponding statement during his report on ways to end the war in Ukraine at a discussion at the Council on Foreign Relations, Suspilne reports .
To persuade Russia to a peace agreement, Kellogg said, the US is already using the seizure of frozen Russian sovereign assets to restore and rearm Ukraine, and maximum sanctions pressure on Russian energy.
He said US President Donald Trump was trying to “stop the war and the killing” and “create a lasting structure of peace”:
“Trump has already spoken to Presidents Putin and Zelensky, and we have learned from previous approaches that we cannot avoid talking to friends and foes alike. Trump has made it a U.S. priority to make peace for both sides, rather than to frame this war as one side defeating the other, an approach that only draws America into endless proxy wars.”
It is worth noting that the term “proxy war” has been actively used over the past three years only by Russian officials and Russian propaganda media.
Recall that Keith Kellogg also named the conditions for the resumption of US military aid to Ukraine. According to him, this depends on Kyiv’s readiness for a peaceful settlement and the signing of an agreement on mineral resources.
