Just a short summery of some of the learnings the past 24 hours, following several different media channels and lots of posts….

  • Reports from first hours of the offensive indicates that the russians use an old WWII tactic. They have put a lot of people forced to serve in the army in front, and behind them there are professional russian soldiers from the parachute regiments… most likely to keep the first line from retreating and killing those who does. But reports claim that both the first line did retreat as well as the paratroopers…
  • There are reports and videos from Kherson city where you can hear small arms fire. Either the Ukrainian Army have been very very fast and already in centre of the city, or the Ukrainian resistance have begun breaking down the russian military from behind… or a combination of the two.
  • Reports claim very heavy Ukrainian artillery support, yesterday according to some sources russia lost more than 450 soldiers, 350 the day before. On top of this we see significant russian loses regarding vehicles and military installations.
  • We see pictures of russian soldiers walking with their belongings (or stolen goods) in plastic bags towards the east.
  • Ukrainian aircraft and helicopters are operating over the Kherson area, indicating that Ukraine has established some kind of air-superiority, at least at a local level.
  • The russian top general responsible for the invasion was fired by putin yesterday, same day as the counter offensive starting, the russian army stands without a command structure in place (if they ever had one)
  • Ukrainians are showing videos of russians leaving ammunition and equipment behind as they flee towards the east.

  1. “Ukrainians are showing videos of russians leaving ammunition and equipment behind as they flee towards the east.”

I suppose it’s like in any war; some fight bitterly, while others run away. I hope the majority of orcs are of the second category.
