As for the air base in Engels, the expert said that strategic aviation is mainly located there. If there were also successful hits, then Russia could lose the Tu-22M3 or Tu-95MS aircraft. They can be damaged or even destroyed.

Kovalenko said that the Tu-95MS is the aircraft that is used during the shelling of Ukraine by the Russians. It launches X-101/X-555 subsonic missiles.

“But, the most important thing is that Russia cannot produce these aircraft now. In Russia, there is no production of the Tu-95MS, they only exploit the Soviet legacy,” Kovalenko said.

According to him, Russia has several dozen combat-ready strategic aircraft left. True, there may be even fewer combat-ready aircraft. There are aircraft that are under repair or need maintenance.

“The resource is exhausted. Up to about three dozen are those that can be combat-ready and used for strikes on the territory of Ukraine,” Kovalenko said.

He also noted that he could only assume the means used for the strikes so far. Perhaps it could be small-sized “air means” similar to those that attacked refineries in Russia.

Kovalenko said that the Tu-95MS for Russia is not just a costly and unique weapon.

“It is worth gold, but in general – priceless, as for Russians. Because they cannot be restored or compensated in any way, “he said.
