The United States has stated that designating Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism will not be effective and will not put pressure on Moscow. The best way to achieve political pressure is to impose strong sanctions on the Russians.
This was stated by US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller at a briefing on Wednesday, January 15. According to him, the large-scale sanctions imposed by Washington against Russia help to achieve political goals more effectively.
In addition, the recognition of Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism will limit the activities of international humanitarian organizations and have other consequences that may affect the ability to work in the region.
“We do not consider this (recognizing Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism. – Ed.) to be the most effective way to achieve existing political goals when it comes to Russia,” said a representative of the US State Department.
The sanctions imposed by the United States against Russia since the beginning of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, including the latest restrictions, have practical consequences, he assured. Miller in this context mentioned Western media reports that tankers belonging to the so-called shadow fleet of the Russian Federation are now unable to ship their oil – in particular, they have begun to stop off the coast of China.
Recall that back in May 2023, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken first suggested that Russia could be recognized as a state sponsor of terrorism . This would lead to Moscow’s international isolation and force the US to impose additional restrictions on countries cooperating with the Kremlin.
A bill to designate Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism has also been introduced in the Senate. However, the White House rejected it, saying it would tie the US’s hands in dealing with Russia and block all efforts to end Russia’s war against Ukraine.
As OBOZ.UA reported, new US sanctions against Russia have targeted key enterprises, foreign partners, and individuals involved in supporting the Russian military. In particular, this concerns a structure created to illegally manage the occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP and subsidiaries of Rosatom.

Surprise, anyone?
The Biden administration has never been short on handing everyone a platter of bullshit during this entire war. “Ukraine doesn’t need F-16s.” “Ukraine has all it needs to conduct a counteroffensive.” “Ukraine has long-range drones, so it doesn’t need long-range missiles.” And so on.
This is just another pack of lies. The Biden administration is afraid of the consequences of declaring mafia land a state sponsor of terrorism, which should’ve been done a long time ago, even under Obama and Trump. None of our inglorious leaders did so, because they are cowards. All of them.
