Moldovan President Maia Sandu has said she would vote for reunification with Romania if the issue were ever put to a referendum, saying it is becoming increasingly difficult for the country to “survive” on its own.

Moldova, a country of about 2.4 million people, wedged between Romania and Ukraine, has been the target of a Russian hybrid war that includes disinformation and election manipulation, Politico reports . “If we have a referendum, I will vote for unification with Romania,” Sandu, who heads a pro-European government in Chisinau, said in an interview with the British podcast The Rest is Politics.

She explained her decision by suggesting to look at what is happening around Moldova and in the world today. “It is becoming increasingly difficult for a small country like Moldova to survive as a democracy, as a sovereign state and, of course, to confront Russia,” Sandu emphasized.Video of the dayAd loading

Romania and Moldova – unification and separation

Moldova was part of Romania from 1918 to 1940, when it was annexed by the USSR, and declared independence again in 1991 after the fall of the Iron Curtain.

According to media reports, in a referendum in 2024, which was overshadowed by Russian interference, a slim majority of Moldovans – 50.4% – voted for EU membership. In parallel, Sandu achieved re-election as president, gaining about 55% of the vote and defeating a pro-Russian opponent.

Despite her personal support for the idea, Sandu acknowledged that unification with Romania does not enjoy the support of the majority of Moldovan citizens, unlike joining the EU. The country applied for EU membership in 2022, and the president called this goal “more realistic.”

Polls show that about two-thirds of Moldovans oppose reunification, while in Romania support for the idea is traditionally higher.

Other news about Moldova and Romania

UNIAN previously reported that Moldova, together with the EU and the US, is developing a plan for the reintegration of Transnistria . Some issues “remain sensitive” and require caution, and some processes “need time.”

Romania, in turn, despite the situation in the region, does not plan to send troops to Ukraine. But the country is still ready to make its contribution. “All participants strongly support the efforts led by the United States,” the country’s president noted.

  1. “Moldova, together with the EU and the US, is developing a plan for the reintegration of Transnistria”

Great news and the blockade has already begun. Once the slime is out of Transnistria, Moldova and Ukraine can breathe easier. Also putin’s black dream of a land bridge to Hungary will be over.

  2. The first step for a reunification or merely to assure Moldova’s safety is to oust the cockroaches from Transnistria. Ukraine is the best candidate to play bouncer. The roaches must be taken captive or killed, and their weapons and ammo confiscated by Ukraine.
