NAEK “Energoatom” connected to the power grid a gas turbine mobile power plant donated to Ukraine by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in January 2023.
Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko said this at a meeting of the Verkhovna Rada committee on energy and housing and communal services on Monday, June 17, Liga.net reports .
“She is working,” said the minister.
Galushchenko noted that “there were a number of aspects with this gas turbine installation.”
“It is installed, it functions and generates electricity. And we need such equipment in order to build distributed generation,” added the head of the Ministry of Energy.
As reported, in January 2023, the American development agency USAID presented Ukraine with a 28 MW gas turbine plant manufactured by General Electric.
In February, it was delivered to Ukraine, but not connected. The president of “Energoatom” Petro Kotin and Minister of Energy Herman Galushchenko took part in the celebrations, who called the installation of this turbine “the first practical step in the implementation of the strategy of the Ministry of Energy regarding the decentralization of the energy system and the development of small generation networks.”
In October 2023, Energoatom tested this gas-turbine mobile power plant in test mode with the participation of Energoatom president Petro Kotin, the company’s press service informed.
The connection of this installation has not been officially reported until now. At the same time, it became known that “Energoatom” owed the state enterprise “Antonov” UAH 89.8 million for the air transportation of a mobile gas turbine installation donated to Ukraine by USAID.
We will remind you that at the end of December 2022, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced that Ukraine began to deploy a network of gas turbine and gas piston mini-power plants. The production of electricity on them is expensive, but they are good because they start working very quickly – up to three minutes.
At the same time, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi announced that Ukraine is moving towards decentralization in the energy sector.
