I examine the reported activation of the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement, in which Turkey and Pakistan agree to rapidly deploy forces to Saudi Arabia after Houthi attacks on Riyadh, Abaha, and an Aramco refinery. The immediate stakes reach from Saudi airspace to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, where Saudi operations, claims over Mokha, and fighting near Taiz put Red Sea shipping at risk.
I map what each of the three members brings—Saudi funding and political weight, Turkish defense technology, and Pakistani manpower and nuclear deterrence—and ask whether those assets translate into real collective defense in a crisis. I also weigh prospective members including Egypt, Syria, Bangladesh, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, and Azerbaijan; the implications for Iran, India, Israel, and Syria; and the Pentagon’s carrier and Marine movement toward the Persian Gulf as Washington seeks to reopen Hormuz.
