US Congressman Gerry Connolly, who is heading the NATO Parliamentary Assembly for the second time, expressed his opinion amid talk about Ukrainian nuclear weapons . In particular, he refuted claims that Ukraine should have kept them after the collapse of the USSR.
“Going back to that Soviet era, inheriting nuclear weapons designed and produced in the USSR was very dangerous for Ukraine. And for many reasons. And terrorism, and the possibility of them falling into third hands… And getting rid of these weapons allowed Ukraine to develop its own identity, separate from the former USSR and to determine independent priorities and goals in foreign policy. I think it is a mistake to think with nostalgia about those old Soviet nuclear weapons. Because they would have been a source of instability and, frankly, a threat to the sovereign and independent Ukrainian state,” he told Radio Liberty.
The publication recalled that President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the US and Germany are skeptical about Ukraine joining NATO, with the latter being more cool about this possibility.
Connolly noted that Germany is a good ally and the current government has allowed Germany to provide weapons to a country in a military conflict for the first time since World War II. Overall, Berlin has done a lot for Kyiv since 2022. In his opinion, Chancellor Olaf Scholz has shown courage in a difficult and complex political situation in his country.
“I can tell you, based on my conversations with Chancellor Scholz, he is very strongly supportive of NATO’s goals and German aspirations are quite consistent with American goals regarding Ukraine. I have not heard him express any skepticism or weariness or anything like that. He has a coalition government, he will have elections, but he has shown real courage in regrouping the German position,” the NATO PA Chairman concluded.

Bullshit. This is a lame attempt to make yourself feel good for a decision that was wrong in every possible way.
The facts speak another language. Taking away Ukraine’s nukes made this war possible in the first place, with all of its terrible consequences and unknown consequences in the future. What happened to Ukraine will convince every other nation on earth with the necessary know-how to pursue getting their own nukes, and discourage any who already have them from ever surrendering them.
Taking away Ukraine’s nukes didn’t make for a safer world, it made it unsafer.
