The Indian rupee hit an all-time low against the dollar during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to the country, where he urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to continue purchasing Russian oil despite tariffs and sanctions imposed by the Donald Trump administration.
On Friday, the rupee fell 0.4% to 90.19 rupees per dollar, down from a historic low of 90.29 rupees the day before.
Since the beginning of the year, the Indian currency has lost more than 5% of its value after the US imposed 50% tariffs on Indian goods for its energy cooperation with the Kremlin. Net capital outflow from Indian financial markets has reached $17 billion since the beginning of the year, and in August and September, the country’s Central Bank recorded an outflow of direct investment—that is, investments in the real sector of the economy.
India’s trade deficit reached a historic high in October due to tariffs that hit exports, Reuters reports. As a result, the rupee became Asia’s worst-performing currency, the Financial Times notes .
During his visit to New Delhi, Putin declared Russia’s readiness to continue “uninterrupted” oil supplies to India, as well as everything “necessary for energy development.”
He also praised Modi, stating that under the Indian prime minister, the country has become a “serious force.” “I think both India and the entire world have seen that India cannot be treated the way it was treated 77 years ago. The Indian people can be proud of their leader,” Putin said.
The BRICS countries don’t have a decent currency between them. India, russia and China use worthless monoploy money and will hardly challenge the dollar or Euro.
