Lance corporal Zherebtsov demolished the concrete fence in the afternoon of October 20. On that day, the military had to overtake the BMP-3 from one military unit to another. According to Zherebtsov, together with a friend, he began to drink vodka before he sat down at the wheel of the BMP-3, and continued while driving. According to one version, the military lagged behind the convoy, decided to take a shortcut, got lost and drove into the airport.
