The winner of the US presidential election, Donald Trump, has a clear idea of what should be achieved in the negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, and some things are not welcome in Ukraine, but they are also not welcome in the Kremlin.
“And this is what should give Ukrainians some confidence about what Trump has planned,” said John Herbst, American diplomat, US ambassador to Ukraine (2003-2005), during a speech at the Fifth Kyiv Jewish Forum ( Kyiv Jewish Forum ). ), director of the Eurasian Center at the US Atlantic Council.
Herbst recalled that Trump is talking about settling the war on the principle that Moscow controls part of Ukraine and Kyiv controls the rest, which would mean some type of ceasefire. But Trump also means that there should be a demilitarized zone that would put Ukraine in a position where it could defend itself well if Moscow resumed aggression. “And I don’t think the Kremlin and Putin like it very much,” the diplomat said.
The American diplomat believes that Putin’s goal is to try to incite Trump to allow Russia to do whatever it wants in Ukraine. If Trump decides he can’t do that, then Putin is in trouble, and that benefits Ukraine.
As for security guarantees for Ukraine, he said that they could be the deployment of European NATO troops on the contact line, and because of that it would be very difficult for Putin to do what he did with the Minsk agreements.
“It is not impossible, but very difficult. And if at the same time we arm Ukraine much more than we have armed today, it will also make the Russians think twice about violating any peace,” Herbst thinks.
But he has no confidence that European troops will actually be deployed in Ukraine: “I can’t say yes, but I can’t say no either.” One can imagine a scenario in which they will do it – provided that the United States are willing to provide, for example, all the resources, including weapons. It could work. But I’m not saying it will.”
At the same time, Herbst said that it is critical for American interests that Putin lose the war in Ukraine. According to him, the vast majority of the Republican Party, including in Congress, understands the danger that Putin’s policy poses for the United States, and would like to continue its strong support for Ukraine.
“Almost all candidates for leadership positions in national security, the Department of Defense and the US Security Council understand the strategic danger of Russia to the United States, and therefore the need to support Ukraine. This is a reason for some optimism, as well as the fact that Trump has put forward certain conditions, through that the Kremlin is embarrassed at the moment. But it’s very much a work in progress. So first we have to see who Trump appoints and then we have to see what they actually do,” he said.
The Kyiv Jewish Forum is taking place for the fifth year in a row. This year, it is held online, and the central venue is Washington. Kyiv Jewish Forum is organized by the Jewish Confederation of Ukraine and The Jerusalem Post .

I suggest a buffer zone 150km inside of mafia land. Not one sq mm should be left under control of the war criminals, rapists and genocidal maniacs. Then all reparations to be paid until sanctions are lifted, no matter how long it takes. putler has nothing whatsoever to bargain with, the West hold all the aces, they just need to stiffen their collective spines and play them right.
Could’ve come to pass already if we had real leaders in the West.
IMO whatever they decide for a ceasefire or buffer zone, etc. will be violated by Putler unless he does a 180 and that won’t happen. Then he would be at odds with Trump and Trump will have a good reason to give Ukraine the kitchen sink. Trump criticized Biden for not giving Ukraine what they needed to win and even said he would help Ukraine more. We’ll see if his rhetoric matches his actions, in which he has a pretty good record for a politician.
I’m counting on the runt wanting everything and on Trump’s not wanting to look like a bad deal-maker. One’s gonna lose in such a scenario, and I doubt it’ll be Trump.
Trump holds all the aces. The rubble ended the day over a 100 to the $. The orc economy is in the shitter, so surely Trump with all the aces is not going to let putler beat him with a pair of twos?
The sorrier mafia land looks, the less likely the orange one will be impressed by the war criminal’s standing. That’s just how he ticks.

John Herbst was named on Nov 13 by EP as Trump’s choice for Ukraine ambassador. But that is not mentioned here. Obviously an envoy for Ukraine has to be pro-Ukraine; even Trump can understand that.
But even if this qualified candidate is chosen, pundits are trying to gloss over the fact that not one pro—Ukraine politician has been hired for a top job. Very much the opposite in fact.
I think it’s common knowledge that the orange one doesn’t like to take advice from anyone if he thinks he knows something better. It’s happened many times before. The fools he chose for his staff are just tagalongs … like dingle balls sticking on his ass. They received those positions because of their tremendous ass kissing abilities. What they want is a not relevant for Trump.
There are a lot of jokes online about Trumps cabinet picks. Some say he chose these people to make himself look the smartest person in the room. 😂
