In Russia, prisoners were deprived of payments for being sent to war in Ukraine

The innovation will come into force on January 1, 2025.

Russia has adopted a resolution according to which one-time payments  to prisoners for signing a contract with the army to participate in the war against Ukraine are cancelled, the publication  Current Time reports .

“Payments are not made to citizens who, on the day of signing a contract for military service, were serving a sentence in the form of imprisonment,” the document states.

It is noted that this innovation will come into force on January 1, 2025.

Previously, prisoners could sign a contract with the Russian Ministry of Defense and receive one-time payments.

Prisoners in the ranks of the Russian army

Earlier, The New York Times found out that the Kremlin has expanded the recruitment of people into its army. In particular, the Russians are recruiting prisoners who receive payments for signing a contract with the Russian Defense Ministry.

Under Russian law, such people would be cleared of charges if they signed up as volunteers, but that decision was reversed.

Olga Romanova, head of the non-governmental organization “Russia Behind Bars,” told journalists that recruiting prisoners into the army breaks the link between crime and punishment. She believes that this could have serious long-term consequences for the level of crime in the country.
