A crisis is unfolding in the freight transportation market in Russia – in January-March of this year, every fifth transport company left the industry.

As noted in the Gruzavtotrans association, about 30% of Russian transporters have stopped business due to debts and inability to pay leasing payments. The number of trucks seized from companies has more than doubled compared to the beginning of 2024 , and by the end of the year the number of industry representatives may decrease by 10-15%.

The main problems of carriers are the fall in prices for transporting goods below cost and high leasing rates: in long-distance transportation, the lower limit of payback is around 100 rubles per 1 km, but in reality prices have dropped to 45-50 rubles. In the market of dump trucks and bulk cargo, with a cost limit of transportation of 5.5 rubles per ton-kilometer, prices have dropped to 3 rubles, and, according to sources in the market, such prices were 15 years ago. Leasing payments sometimes reach 50% of the price of the car, which is why business stops, and cars are seized.

Leasing companies seize equipment at the first failure to pay, resulting in tractors simply sitting idle at the yards and not working.

According to market participants, this situation was a consequence of a decrease in the solvency of customers against the background of an increase in the key rate, an increase in waste collection, a reduction in infrastructure projects, etc. Expensive loans led to stagnation or decline in the business of many companies, which reduced the need for trucks .

In February, it was reported that almost a third of logistics companies in Russia are currently in a pre-bankruptcy state .

Previously, the president of the Russian AvtoVAZ stated that the concern’s warehouses had accumulated 100,000 unsold cars, compared to the norm of 60,000. This situation is hitting the concern’s financial model, taking into account the high interest rates that have to be paid on loans.
