US citizen Russell Bentley, who had been fighting for DPR militants since 2014, was killed in Donetsk . In early April, he was detained by Russian soldiers and taken to an unknown direction.

The fact of the American’s death was confirmed without details by the editor-in-chief of the Russian propaganda television channel RT, Margarita Simonyan.

“Russell Bentley, aka “Texas”, a real American, really from Texas, died in Donetsk. He fought there for our people,” she wrote in her Telegram .

The American’s local wife, Lyudmila, previously stated that her husband was detained by servicemen from one of the Russian army units. 

“My husband was taken and continues to be illegally detained by the military, tankmen, from the 5th brigade. Russell was harshly detained on April 8, 2024, between approximately 16:20 and 17:00 in the Avtobaza area in the Petrovsky district of Donetsk,” she wrote in a telegram -Russell Bentley’s channel on April 15th.

The head of the Russian media company Russian Hour, Alexander Korobko, also said that Bentley was detained by “persons in military uniform.”

On April 12, the “DPR police” announced that they were searching for the missing American, who “left in an unknown direction.”

Former field commander of the DPR militants, Alexander Khodakovsky, published a post on his Telegram channel dedicated to the death of Bentley. 

“The military department must show that it knows how not only to remind people of responsibility for discrediting, but also to restore order to its affairs,” Khodakovsky wrote, commenting on the death of the American.

However, he soon deleted his publication, apparently afraid of “responsibility for discrediting.”

Who is Russell Bentley

Bentley was born in 1960 in the USA and lived almost his entire life in Texas. In 2014, he came to the occupied Donbass, where he joined the Russian-backed terrorists of the DPR group.

According to the American publication Texas Monthly , in the past Bentley was a military engineer, advocated the legalization of marijuana, was found guilty of smuggling and selling drugs in the United States and was a fugitive from justice.

Arriving in Donbass, Bentley managed to fight a little for terrorists, but then retrained as a propagandist. He willingly and extensively gave interviews to Russian media, telling how he despises America and loves communism and Russia. At the same time, he conducted active pro-Russian propaganda on social networks addressed to the American audience.
