Szijjártó criticized the decision to take away the enlargement portfolio from Hungarian European Commissioner Oliver Vargei.

The hypocrisy of Brussels regarding EU enlargement is astounding, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, “is part of it.” Zoltan Kovács, the spokesman of the Hungarian government, wrote about this in the X social network, quoting the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, Peter Szijártó .
He noted that this was Szijjártó’s reaction to von der Leyen’s decision to take away the portfolio of Commissioner for EU Enlargement from Hungarian Commissioner Oliver Vargei. In Hungary, in particular, it is noted that the countries of the Western Balkans have been waiting for EU membership for more than 14 years, “and behind closed doors, many EU leaders oppose enlargement, despite public support.”
“Von der Leyen’s decision clearly shows that she is part of this hypocrisy by ensuring that the enlargement portfolio does not go to pro-enlargement Hungary,” the spokesman added, citing Szijjártó.
At the same time, he added that “despite the setbacks, Hungary remains committed to supporting the accession of the Western Balkan countries to the EU, and the minister emphasized that the struggle for fair enlargement will continue.”
