Secretary of State Macro Rubio has been tasked with preparing a proposal for the purchase of Greenland as quickly as possible.

The United States would have to pay between $500 billion and $700 billion for President Donald Trump’s idea to buy Greenland .

NBC News reported this , citing three people familiar with the cost estimates. This cost estimate was developed by academics and former US officials as part of the planning process, given Trump’s desire to acquire the island.

The $700 billion figure is more than half of the annual budget for Trump’s national security-focused Department of War.

Meanwhile, officials from Denmark and Greenland rejected the White House’s assertion that the United States would receive the peninsula “one way or another.” Specifically, they maintain the position that Greenland is not for sale.Read also:

At the same time, a senior White House official said US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has already been instructed to present a proposal to purchase Greenland in the coming weeks, because such a plan is a “high priority” for Trump.

On Wednesday, January 14, Rubio and US Vice President J.D. Vance plan to meet with officials from Denmark and Greenland who have traveled to Washington to better understand Trump’s intentions and proposals.

In the hours leading up to this meeting, the message from Greenlandic authorities was consistent.

“Greenland does not want to belong to, be governed by, or be part of the United States. We choose Greenland as we know it today – part of the Kingdom of Denmark,” Greenland’s Foreign Minister Viviane Motzfeldt emphasized upon arriving in Washington.

As the channel notes, while some Trump administration officials have said the US might use military force to seize the island, which has a population of 57,000, some other Trump administration officials and outside White House allies consider a US attempt to acquire or create a new union with Greenland a more likely solution.

Another option being considered involves forming a so-called Compact of Free Association with Greenland. Such an agreement would include financial assistance from the United States in exchange for the presence of security forces on the island. This option would be less expensive than purchasing Greenland.

  1. The meeting has ended with nothing solved. The Danish foreign minister says “fundamental disagreement” remains after “frank” White House talks over Greenland

Lars Løkke Rasmussen, in a joint news conference with the Greenland foreign minister, says it is “absolutely not necessary” for US to acquire the Arctic territory, and that there is no “instant threat” from Russia.
