So many are talking about stopping the war, but how? Imagine yourself in the place of Putin (yes, it is hard to get into the role of a psychopath, but still try). USA withdraws, no one provides guarantees to Ukraine, why would you stop or not try again? On his place I would just push on if I knew everyone was weak. US cannot cut supplies to Russia like it did with Ukraine. Why stop? What may happen if Russia does not stop? And how to make sure Russia won’t recover and attack again?
Ukraine has agreed to 30 days ceasefire in recent negotiations with US. And I suspect the withdrawal from Sudzha (city in Kursk Oblast of Russia) was part of the deal too.
Does Russia care? Of course not. At the same night their rocket hit a cargo ship with grain and killed 4 people. How many of you know it? Are you tracking Russian news outlets? I do. They mostly say βNo, we should not give rest to the Ukrainian armyβ. And what can you do with them? Do you know magical kind words that would make them change their minds?
I am curious how long it will take for US administration to realize that Russia is flushing the proposal to toilet. Or maybe Russians accept but then play the fool. Also curious what Russia would do to show that we would break ceasefire if it miraculously happen. False flag operation? Provocation? They are masters of such things.
So many talks βyour young men wonβt need dyingβ. Yes, I fully agree that this terrible meat grinder should stop. Why would I want it to continue? But show me the button which switches it off please. You may only break it.βΈ
Do you know what happened with Ukrainian men on territories occupied by Russia in 2014? They were all drafted and used as cheap cannon fodder. And the same will happen on the newly occupied regions. Ukrainians will attack, Russians would be shooting their backs if they refuse or retreat. And if they are not stopped, they will slowly crawl to EU borders and will go further (in WW2 they even started drafting Poles when Ukrainians were running out).
Even in Russia, they are taking ethnic minorities first, and in Moskow your chances to be drafted are very low. In their twisted minds, itβs a very good tactic: you get cheap troops and do ethnic cleansing in one move. Why do you think there are 65 endangered languages in Russia? And may be hundred more are gone. Some ethnicities spoke those languages in the past. Russia is a graveyard and prison of nations.
So, tell me why we should believe it will stop if Russia is not pushed back or not faces real threat? I wish it was not Ukrainian army doing this job. It’s not fun at al to do it. This can be done even without a fight, by blocking their economy for real (80% of their tankers go through NATO waters), and they won’t be able to finance the war. But I understand very well this is unlikely to happen. Tell me, how you stop the war without weakening Russia? What magic spells do you know?

You are absolutely right that any attempt to ‘freeze’ the war without systematically weakening Russia will only give it time to regroup and launch another attack. History and Russiaβs current tactics confirm this. However, it is also crucial to note that while the West understands this threat, its actions remain insufficiently decisive in terms of sanctions and restrictions on Russiaβs military-industrial complex. As experience shows, partial sanctions or half-measures do not workβradical steps are needed, such as a full embargo on critical technologies, complete isolation of Russian financial flows, and strengthened support for the Ukrainian military. Is there an understanding of this in the West? Partially. But it is still not deep enough, and the political will remains too weak.

Earlier post from Volodymyr:
For those who do not like the emotions I am putting in my posts, let me explain why I have them at the first place. This is where my children sleep for several months in a row. Near the door between the walls. I am putting their mattresses on the floor every evening. Because every night we hear the explosions. Russian suicide drones are flying around and no one can guarantee they won’t explode in your apartment.
But even with this, I know I am lucky. Because I know men who have not seen their families for months as their wives and children moved abroad to safer place. I know kids that have not seen their father because he’s in the army now. And I know kids who will never see their fathers again. And the scariest photos I’ve seen are fathers standing at the coffins of their children killed by Russian rockets. Yes, I project it all on myself as I may be in the place of any of them. Try doing it too, just a little a bit.
I know people who do not even go outside, I’ve seen many got traumatized to the level that they are unable to work and even got seriously sick.
I must be having some form of PTSD too. May be not serious one, as I haven’t been in trenches and may be just imagining the horrors. But still. You do not get nightmare with your city disappearing in nuclear mushroom if you are OK. You do not post like crazy every day if you are ok. At least I didn’t before the war. And I know It will take long before I may enjoy fireworks and not take their sounds for bombs explosions.
So if someone thinks I should care too much about wordings to avoid offending someone who seeks to be offended, I have to disappoint these folks. Because they just look childish. Really, would I believe someone sitting in a safe place has real problems to blame me in the wrong shade of meaning of the words in the language that is not even my native one? I envy you guys, I wish to live like you liveβ¦ If you are unable to understand how good your life is and get triggered by my wordsβ¦ Well, I cannot wish you experience the same, you did nothing wrong to deserve it. But really, have just a bit of imagination to visualize itβ¦
I think that broadcasting raw emotions is more important than writing dry and safe texts. This gives the audience better understanding. At least to the part of audience that has empathy and not obsessed with narcissism or some cult. Fortunately, I am not a politician to weight every word before saying it. Trump or Musk won’t read me. My purpose is to give a better understanding of Ukraine and events to counter the absurd misinfo coming from Kremlin and even repeated by some people in the West.

Because trumpkov has already given so much away to putler, Ukraineβs options are now severely limited.
There was a chance to pressurize putler by reversing Bidenβs appalling errors: ruling out NFZ, ruling out US boots on the ground, ruling out Ukraineβs future Nato membership and ruling out restoring Ukraineβs nuclear capability. Now Trump is ruling out the return of Crimea and insisting on Ukraine gifting sovereign Ukrainian territory to a murderous psychopath.
So whatβs left now? Not a lot, but there remains :
1/ the option to supply modern weapons of sufficient power to defeat the enemy and :
2/ insist on putler giving up at least some thieved land.
Option 1/ is now essential for Ukraineβs survival. As for option 2/, this is a sensible way forward:
Trump should insist on the full restoration of Ukraineβs legal territory, but settle for a final non-negotiable fallback position:
Putler must completely leave Kharkiv oblast, Zaporizhzhia oblast, Kherson oblast and Mykolaiv oblast.
Unfortunately that means that putler keeps all Crimea and the parts of Luhansk and Donetsk he currently occupies.
But Ukraine survives.
ALL the kidnapped children, hostages and POWβs must return before any agreement.
