Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett questioned whether Melania Trump really had the “extraordinary achievements” necessary to obtain the prestigious EB-1 visa.
Melania Trump’s immigration background has been the focus of heated debate in Congress this week. During a hearing before the House Judiciary Committee, Democratic Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett publicly questioned the legality of the EB-1 visa that the president’s wife received in 2001, Newsweek reports .
This category, also known as the “Einstein visa,” is usually issued to people with “significant achievements” and “enduring international recognition” – Nobel Prize winners, Olympic champions, prominent scientists or artists.
“Last time I checked, the first lady didn’t have any of these awards,” Crockett said. “Melania is a model, but not on the level of Tyra Banks or Cindy Crawford. And yet she got a visa that is usually reserved for exceptional talent.”
The congresswoman accused Republicans of double standards, noting that they are too eager to persecute ordinary immigrants while turning a blind eye to the questionable circumstances of obtaining visas by people close to Trump.
“Honesty is not grabbing legal immigrants off the streets and putting them in vans without identification,” she said. “Honesty is also reviewing how the president’s wife ended up in the United States.”
Jasmine Crockett ended her speech sarcastically: “You don’t have to be Einstein to understand that the math doesn’t converge here.”
