The US President did not find anything wrong with the leaked conversation.
US President Donald Trump said the controversial leaked phone call between Special Representative Steve Witkoff and Kremlin dictator Putin’s aide Yuri Ushakov contained nothing unusual and reflected “standard negotiating work.”
According to Trump on board Air Force One, Whitkoff was merely fulfilling his function and could have given similar advice to both Moscow and Kyiv.
“No, I haven’t seen [the recording]… It’s a standard thing, you know? He needs to sell it to Ukraine. He needs to ‘sell’ Ukraine to Russia. That’s what a negotiator does. You have to say, ‘Look, they want this. You need to convince them of this.’ It’s a very standard form of negotiation,” Trump said.
He added that he “can imagine” Witkoff saying similar things to the Ukrainian side, since each side must make concessions.
