Today, thousands of Russian citizens are “storming” the border, fearing they will become cannon fodder in the war against Ukraine. Despite the Russian authorities’ statements that there will be no “major mobilization,” no one believes this, especially since the facts indicate the opposite. The situation has also sharply worsened in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.

On August 11, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that Russia is preparing a mobilization for the fall, which should take place after the mock parliamentary elections (which will be held in September). This information was received by the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
Meanwhile, panic has gripped Russia over the mass appearance of vacancies for specialists in mobilization training, military registration, and citizen reservation. A surge in the publication of such ads from state institutions, subordinate enterprises, and large commercial companies was recorded on the leading recruitment portals of the Russian Federation in early August.
As for mobilization plans in the Russian Federation, Ukrainian intelligence called the figure from 300 to 500 thousand, but the final number will depend on the tasks assigned to the occupying forces. That is, on Putin’s criminal intentions.
According to Oleksandr Kovalenko, a military and political commentator for the Information Resistance group, in order to continue the war against Ukraine, taking into account the retention of the captured territories, as well as maintaining the rhythm of the creeping offensive, Russia needs to mobilize at least half a million people during 2027.
“If the Kremlin is considering opening a new front, for example, the Chernihiv direction, or strengthening the North-Slobozhansky/Slobozhansky, then in this case we will already be talking about about 700 thousand. If Putin intends to open a new theater of operations – in Europe, we are already talking about almost a million-strong set of human resources,” says Kovalenko.
The main thing is to confidently deny
Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzia, stated that no mobilization is planned in Russia. At a briefing on August 20, one of the journalists asked Nebenzia if he knew that thousands of Russians were currently fleeing to Georgia (previously, information had appeared that 20,000 people had crossed the Verkhniy Lars checkpoint on the Russian-Georgian border in one day (!) ).
“Don’t worry about mobilization in Russia. I think it has been officially said many times – we don’t need mass mobilization now, and it is not planned or expected, as far as I know,” Nebenzya said.
“But let’s see what happens after the elections – which of us will be right and which will be wrong,” he added cynically.
It is at least unwise to believe the statements of both Nebenzi and other representatives of the aggressor country. It is worth remembering what happened before.
In Russia, a “partial mobilization” was carried out in September 2022, although immediately before that, government representatives claimed that “there will be no such mobilization.”
And in the occupied territory of Ukraine, in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, even earlier – before the full-scale invasion – in February 2022, a large-scale “hunt” for men continued right on the streets.
Moreover, as OBOZ.UA’s interlocutors in occupied Donetsk told, raids were also carried out in multi-storey buildings. This, in particular, happened in the Mirny and Tekstilnyk microdistricts. The entrances were blocked by security forces, some remained downstairs, and some went around the apartments and “ransacked the men”. At the same time, they claimed that they were being taken “for mandatory military training for only two weeks”. But in the end, they were sent to war.
What is happening in the occupation today?
According to OBOZ.UA sources in Ukrainian intelligence, as well as among residents of the occupied territory, the situation there sharply worsened in August.
For example, in Luhansk, they began to take away those who had previously been forcibly mobilized back in 2022 directly from their jobs.
“We are talking about those who were able to be released due to health reasons, that is, they were seriously injured at that time,” the source claims.
According to him, they took away employees of the municipal gas company and workers of the Marshal pipeline fittings factory and took them to an unknown destination. They all worked unofficially, without registration – but this is a familiar story in the occupied territory.
“So they supposedly weren’t there. The families panicked – it’s clear why. According to my information, these men are already at the front,” the source added.
It’s even “more fun” now in the part of Donetsk region controlled by the Russian invaders. Raids have begun in the occupied cities – they check documents “and, according to some incomprehensible algorithm, they detain and deport.”
Brigades searching for so-called “SZCH” (those who allegedly illegally left their unit or place of service) have also become sharply more active. According to our source, the database of such fugitives includes tens of thousands of residents of the occupied territory from the Donetsk region alone.
And this despite the fact that some of them fought on the side of Russia (in the ranks of the “DPR”) voluntarily since 2014, and some – forcibly; however, neither of them subsequently signed any contracts for service in the Russian army. Moreover, some never received Russian passports. However, they appear on the lists.
Our interlocutors say that this particular category of those who do not want to fight is being “harshly trained.” They are checking their place of residence, visiting relatives, and asking neighbors.
“In Makiivka and Donetsk, there were cases when “manhunters” even paid neighbors to warn them about the appearance of these fugitives . This is the first time I’ve heard of this, but this is 100% information,” the Donetsk resident shared.
He also said that everyone understands: if a mass mobilization takes place in Russia, it will not bypass the residents of the occupied territories. And now some of them have also started to leave abroad. Moreover, most of them are using Ukrainian passports, which they have kept, even if they had previously met the Russian occupiers with the tricolor in their hands.
