The Polish oil and gas company PGNiG sent a statement to the Russian energy company Gazprom about its intention to terminate the Yamal agreement from December 31, 2022.
The Polish Radio reported about the decision.
“According to the contract, the parties to the agreement are required to submit an application for further cooperation after 2022 three years before the expected end of its validity on December 31, 2022,” the massage said.
PGNiG noted that the company’s previous activities related to the diversification of gas import directions to Poland after 2022, in particular, the signing of contracts for the supply of liquefied natural gas, the acquisition of natural gas fields in the North Sea and the measures carried out by the operator of the transport system as part of the development of the gas transportation system are appropriate for ensuring the country’s energy security and allow termination of the Yamal Treaty in accordance with its provisions.

The Yamal contract was signed in 1996. It provides for the supply of approximately 10 billion cubic meters of gas per year. According to the “take-or-pay” principle imposed by Gazprom, Poland is obliged to take at least 8.7 billion cubic meters of Russian gas. PGNiG Vice President Maciej Wozniak said that in 2023 the company will be able to cover domestic gas demand in the amount of more than 24 billion cubic meters.
