Geert Wilders has met with President Zelensky of Ukraine. The PVV leader announced this on X. He spoke with Zelensky about the war and the support of the Netherlands, but also about ‘the corruption in Ukraine and the chance for peace’.
The Nord Stream issue and the Ukrainian men staying in the Netherlands instead of helping in Ukraine were also discussed. Wilders also says that he had a ‘good conversation’ with Zelensky and thanks him for it.
The meeting between Wilders and Zelensky is very striking, says political reporter Frits Wester. “Wilders has previously shown that he has great difficulty with the military and financial support that the Netherlands gives to Ukraine.”
Wester continues: “Prime Minister Schoof has emphasized that Wilders is fully permitted to have international contacts as party leader, but that is in his own capacity and not on behalf of the Dutch government.”
Since the beginning of the war, the Netherlands has taken a leading role in aid to Ukraine. For example, the Netherlands, along with only a few other countries, supplies F-16s to Ukraine. Minister of Defence Ruben Brekelmans said this week that he wants to maintain that leading role and accelerate aid where possible.
More than 3.1 billion euros in support
Since the Russian invasion, the Netherlands has already provided more than 3.1 billion euros in military aid to Ukraine. Yesterday, the Netherlands promised missiles that can be used in F-16s to take down other aircraft, drones and missiles. According to the minister, this delivery of missiles will not be the last. “The attacks on the country are massive, and Ukraine always asks for more equipment.”
In the past, as party leader of the PVV, Wilders has been critical of the support for Ukraine, but that was when he was still in opposition. Since the PVV became one of the coalition parties of the new cabinet, Wilders has adopted a different tone.
