German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, during a visit to Vilnius on May 22, affirmed Germany’s resolve with NATO partners to defend every inch of the alliance’s territory against any aggression, Reuters reported.

“Anyone who challenges NATO must know that we are prepared,” he said.

“Anyone who threatens an ally must know that the entire alliance will jointly defend every inch of NATO territory. Protecting Vilnius is protecting Berlin.”

Merz emphasized the need to strengthen Europe’s long-term defense capabilities and expand its defense industry, noting Germany’s significant investments in its domestic forces and the importance of NATO’s unity against Russian aggression.

“We stand firmly shoulder-to-shoulder with Ukraine, but we also stand together as Europeans, and we play on the same team with the U.S. when possible,” he added.
