Germany proposes joint NATO mission to protect Greenland – Bloomberg

Germany will propose creating a joint NATO mission to monitor and protect security interests in the Arctic region to ease tensions with the US over its threats to annex Greenland.

This is reported by Bloomberg, citing two sources familiar with the opinion of the German government, Censor.NET reports.

“Baltic Sentinel” can be an example

According to the agency’s interlocutors, the Baltic Sentry mission, which was established a year ago to protect NATO security in the Baltic Sea, could become a model for a new mission, which could be called Arctic Sentry.

The new mission will focus on ensuring the security of Greenland.

“While US President Donald Trump has long talked about making Greenland part of the US for national security reasons, his attention to the self-governing island, which is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, has intensified in recent days after the US raid to capture Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro,” Bloomberg writes.

Allies are concerned about Trump’s plans

The actions have raised new concerns among allies about Trump’s willingness to deploy military force to achieve his foreign policy goals. His rhetoric on Greenland has sparked a flurry of diplomatic activity as officials try to figure out his intentions.

In particular, German Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil stated that the future of the island should be decided solely by Denmark and Greenland.

“Territorial sovereignty and integrity must be respected. These principles of international law apply to everyone, including the United States. We are working together as NATO allies to enhance security in the Arctic, not against each other,” he said.

Vaderful flies to the USA

The publication writes that in the coming days, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadeful intends to visit Washington. He will meet with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

“Where there are different views, we want to work on these differences in dialogue in order to properly fulfill our shared responsibility for peace and security. The North Atlantic is strategically important for our common security,” the German minister said.

Vaddeful said he plans to discuss with Rubio how best to “carry this responsibility within NATO” together – given the old and new rivalry in the region between Russia and China.

“The legitimate interests of all NATO allies, as well as the interests of the inhabitants of the region, must be at the center of our considerations. Of course, this also applies to Greenland and its people,” the German Foreign Minister added.

  • It was previously reported that  the United Kingdom has begun talks with European allies about the possible deployment of military forces in Greenland to strengthen Arctic defenses and ease concerns from US President Donald Trump.
  • On January 9, 2026, US President Donald Trump again expressed interest in purchasing Greenland. He stated that he would like to make the deal the easy way.
