Germany has proposed creating an alternative to Tomahawk missiles together with Ukraine and criticized the policy of US President Donald Trump. Washington’s refusal to deploy such missiles on German territory weakens Russia’s deterrence and directly affects European security.
This was stated by Roderich Kiesewetter, a security expert for the German ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party, who called the US decision a “huge mistake .” He was quoted by Deutsche Welle.
According to him, Europe must urgently develop its own long-range systems in cooperation with Ukraine in order to have an alternative to American means by 2030.
“The solution is to develop something similar together with Ukraine, so that by 2030 such systems are already available,” the security expert urged.
By depriving Europe of Tomahawk, Trump gives Putin a gift
Kiesewetter emphasized that the absence of American medium-range missiles in Germany directly affects the security of the continent against the backdrop of the nuclear threat from the Russian Federation.
He also believes that the US’s refusal to deploy Tomahawks is an even more serious challenge than the reduction of the US military contingent in Europe. In his opinion, such a move sends a dangerous signal to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, who violated the treaty on the limitation of intermediate-range and shorter-range missiles back in 2017.
“Russia does not negotiate anything, it presents a fact,” the expert recalled, explaining the reason for his concern.
Risk of blackmail from Russia
Separately, experts warn about the risk of increased military pressure from the aggressor country, Russia.
Thus, security analyst Nico Lange supported the need to create a European long-range weapon independent of the US. He recalled that since 2018, Moscow has deployed Iskander complexes in the Kaliningrad region, which already pose a constant threat to Europe.
According to him, the absence of American missiles in Germany only deepens the “deterrence deficit” and could lead to a situation where Russia gains an advantage and uses it for blackmail.
“If the deployment of American missiles does not take place, we will be left with a gap in our defense. Thanks to its missiles in Kaliningrad, Russia has a potential advantage over us, and we could slide into a state where we will be manipulated through blackmail,” Lange warned.
That is why Europe needs its own long-range weapons, independent of Washington’s political decisions, emphasized Nico Lange.

The US is also delaying a major defense contract with Japan for hundreds of Tomahawk cruise missiles that Tokyo had expected to receive in the coming years, citing the war with Iran, during which the US used hundreds of such missiles.
US President Donald Trump said Washington could reduce its military presence in Germany more than previously planned. He said the withdrawal would involve more than 5,000 troops, and that number could increase.
Trump is also considering the possibility of withdrawing American troops not only from Germany, but also from other NATO countries. In particular, this concerns Spain and Italy, which, in his opinion, did not support the United States enough during the war with Iran.
