Germany is ready to punish Hungary and Slovakia, – Merz

The European Union’s decisions cannot depend on a small minority, he says.

Germany is ready to consider the option of terminating EU financial support for Slovakia and Hungary if these countries continue to deviate from the agreed course of development of the European Union.

As Bloomberg reports , German Chancellor Friedrich Merz made the announcement at the WDR Europaforum conference.

According to him, member states that violate the rule of law could face consequences, as there is always the option to withdraw European funds:

“If necessary, we will deal with it. We will not be able to avoid this conflict with Hungary and Slovakia if we continue on this course. We cannot allow the decisions of the entire EU to depend on a small minority. And certainly there could be clearer words and perhaps tougher conflicts.”

Germany is an important partner for both export-oriented countries, where automakers, including Volkswagen AG, significantly contribute to economic growth. As the publication notes, Merz’s statement demonstrates his readiness to escalate the conflict with Budapest and Bratislava.

Hungary and Slovakia vs. the EU

As a reminder, earlier, the party of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban submitted to parliament a new bill entitled “Transparency in Public Life.”

This document allows the Office for the Protection of Sovereignty to “blacklist” organizations that receive foreign funding and are considered a threat to national sovereignty.

Critics compare these initiatives to Russia’s “foreign agents” law , viewing them as a tool to suppress the opposition and independent media.

As a reminder, Orban’s opposition has repeatedly led to delays in EU decisions on aid to Ukraine and the imposition of sanctions against Russia. And the government of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has intensified rhetoric directed against the European Union and Ukraine .

  1. “If necessary, we will deal with it. We will not be able to avoid this conflict with Hungary and Slovakia if we continue on this course. We cannot allow the decisions of the entire EU to depend on a small minority. And certainly there could be clearer words and perhaps tougher conflicts.”

The solution is very simple and democratic. Change the laws so any vote is a majority vote not a unanimous one. Even the EU wouldn’t need a dozen hot air meetings to solve this problem.

    • And NATO should do the same. It’s been atrocious watching both little trash countries leading the EU and NATO around the arena on their nose rings, while Ukraine has been suffering a three-year horror.

  2. So, Merz is indeed a better chancellor than the wobbly Scholz had been.
It’s more than high time to neuter both the fat, ugly toad and his Slovakian sidekick.
