German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said Germany, together with France and the United Kingdom, is preparing a new European initiative aimed at advancing negotiations on ending Russia’s war against Ukraine, UATV English reports.

In an interview with Welt am Sonntag, cited by Deutsche Welle, Wadephul stated that the so-called “E3” format — involving Germany, France and Britain — intends to increase Europe’s role in future diplomatic efforts.

“Together with France and the United Kingdom in the E3 format, we are making a new attempt to re-enter negotiations, with a greater European role in the coming weeks and months,” the German minister said.

According to Wadephul, Europe is prepared to assume greater responsibility in efforts to achieve peace. He added that the issue is currently being discussed with both the United States and Ukraine.

The remarks come amid growing debate in Europe over the future of diplomatic initiatives related to the war. Earlier, the Financial Times reported that European leaders are beginning to prepare for the possibility of direct negotiations with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, as frustration grows over U.S. President Donald Trump’s peace initiatives regarding the war in Ukraine.

Wadephul also recently stated that Europe should study and adopt Ukraine’s defense experience as the continent increases its focus on long-term security and military preparedness.
