07/21/2025

Germany and the United States have agreed to transfer five Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine. The deliveries are to take place”as soon as possible” to strengthen the defense of Ukrainian skies.

This was stated by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius during the 29th meeting of the Contact Group on Defense Issues in Ukraine (Ramstein format), which took place on July 21 under the chairmanship of Britain and Germany. According to him, the agreement was reached last week in Washington during a meeting with his American counterpart.

“During my trip to Washington last week, I agreed with Pete Hegseth that Germany would contribute to providing [Ukraine] with five much-needed Patriot systems as soon as possible,” Pistorius said.

Delivery of Patriot air defense systems will take place in the near future

The head of the German defense ministry said that coordination of supplies would take place in close cooperation with partners “over the next few days.” He also confirmed that Germany would provide additional air defense systems and ammunition, and the mechanism for implementing these plans would take place “in a spirit of mutual trust.”

“Germany will provide additional air defense systems and much-needed ammunition,” he said.

What is known about the Ramstein format meeting?

On July 21, a new meeting of the Contact Group on Defense Issues in Ukraine in the “Ramstein” format took place . This is an association of over 50 states that coordinate efforts to assist Ukraine in countering Russian aggression.

The meeting was held online with the participation of defense ministers and their deputies from 52 countries , including NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe Alexus Hrynkevich, as well as dozens of Alliance and partner countries.

This is the first meeting of the Contact Group following the personnel reshuffle in the Ukrainian government, including the appointment of Denys Shmyhal as Minister of Defense of Ukraine, replacing Rustem Umerov. The participants are discussing support for Ukraine, the supply of weapons, and coordination of security activities.

Shmyhal voiced Ukraine’s key expectations from the 29th meeting in the “Ramstein” format. Among the priorities:

  • operational procurement of air defense systems, in particular from the USA;
  • financial assistance to cover this year’s procurement deficit;
  • advance planning of support for 2026.

What preceded

Earlier, the German Defense Minister met with US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in Washington. The parties discussed “the entire spectrum of possible arms supplies from the US.” In this regard, Pistorius noted that the most important thing is that the US “changed its tone” on the issue of assistance to Ukraine.

In addition, European NATO members will buy billions of dollars in weapons from the United States, including Patriot anti-missile batteries, and send them to Kyiv. And Germany will play a leading role in this scheme . The same opinion regarding the supply of weapons was expressed by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. According to him, such military support will improve the security situation and protect Ukrainians from Russian attacks.

According to Pistorius, the German political leadership is quite satisfied with the agreement reached in NATO with the assistance of the US president on the supply of weapons to Ukraine. However, Germany, at least for now, will not disclose the details of what weapons will be transferred to Ukraine and when.

As OBOZ.UA reported, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer hinted that London could join Germany in purchasing weapons from the United States for transfer to Ukraine . Although this was not announced after the British Prime Minister’s meeting with the German Chancellor, relevant negotiations are already underway.

  1. Germany’s government is crawling with pruSSian shit. Merz and Dobrindt are the only exceptions.

  2. Good deal. The warehouses are finally open in the US and without restrictions, so far. Good that we have some asap kit coming and already making plans for 2026

  3. Before they said it would be months, if not years, away. Now they say “ASAP”. But they also said they “will not disclose the details of what weapons will be transferred to Ukraine and when.'”

    So, ASAP could mean the same time period as previously stated. Without indicating if delivery is being sped up at all, this is a “nothingburger” of an announcement.
