Germany and Qatar have agreed on a long-term energy partnership.

This was announced by German Economy Minister Robert Habeck during a visit to Doha, reports DW.

Gabek noted that this is a step towards greater independence from Russia against the background of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

According to Gabek after a meeting in Doha with the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the parties agreed on a long-term energy partnership. He also stressed the “strong dynamics”, noting that the emir showed even wider support than expected.

According to Habek, the heads of German companies accompanying him during his visit to Qatar will now hold detailed negotiations with the Qatari side on concluding contracts. The Minister did not specify the amount of gas from Qatar.

Qatar is one of the world’s largest suppliers of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Prior to his visit to Doha, Gabek said it was both a short-term and a long-term gas supply from Qatar. The Minister announced his intention to speed up the construction of LNG reception terminals in Germany.

According to Habek, the agreed partnership with Qatar envisages not only the supply of LNG to Germany, but also the development of renewable energy sources, as well as measures to improve energy efficiency.
