Stefan Thumann, head of the German arms company Donaustahl, which supplies combat drones to Ukraine, was allegedly the target of a planned assassination using the nerve agent Novichok, Bild reported on Aug. 19.
According to the newspaper, agents had been monitoring the businessman and were allegedly preparing to kill him.
German law enforcement informed Thumann of a concrete threat shortly before Christmas 2025, the report said. Since then, the 39-year-old businessman has been under constant protection and has regularly changed where he lives.
Christian Democratic Union lawmaker Bastian Ernst said in an RTL documentary that, according to the information available to him, Novichok was the planned method of attack.
“The information we have clearly indicates that this was supposed to happen using Novichok. No one else acts like that,” he said.
According to Ernst, that points toward Russian involvement, though he said it is currently impossible to prove directly who was behind the planned attack.
Thumann said in interviews with RTL and Stern that he sees the situation as a direct threat to his life.
“I have become one of the biggest threats to Putin’s regime in Europe,” he said.
According to the businessman, Russia’s war against Ukraine has become for him “a completely personal war,” and he now sees the confrontation as “a duel for my life” with Russian military intelligence.
Because of the threat, Thumann has already prepared a will, signed organ donation papers, and issued advance instructions in case of serious illness.
