German Foreign Minister Johann Wadeful plans to call on Marco Rubio to become more actively involved in diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

As Censor.NET reports , he said this in an interview with the radio station Deutschlandfunk, excerpts from which are cited by Reuters .

Vadeful, who recently visited Ukraine, including Kyiv and Kharkiv, said that American diplomacy regarding Russia’s war against Ukraine has so far been largely conducted by US President Donald Trump’s special envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff.

The German minister plans to have a phone conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday . According to Wadeful, he wants to convince Rubio to personally become more actively involved in diplomatic efforts to end the war and resume negotiations.

“Perhaps I myself can push Rubio to be more active in this direction,” said Vaddeful, adding that Berlin is also using other channels to promote the resumption of negotiations.

Germany also maintains diplomatic contacts with Turkey, several Gulf states and Egypt — states that maintain closer relations with Russia than most European countries. According to Wadeful, Berlin is using these channels to promote the resumption of negotiations. 

Negotiations to end the war

At the same time, the negotiation process involving Ukraine, Russia, and the United States has effectively stalled, particularly against the backdrop of the war in Iran. Last week, the Kremlin said it currently has no information about a possible next visit to Russia by American special envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Moscow was ready to consider new proposals from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and continue dialogue with Washington. At the same time, he previously stressed that the Russian side would only accept those proposals that, in its opinion, correspond to the Kremlin’s stated goals and “realities on the ground.”
