German drone manufacturer Quantum Systems has opened covert factories in Ukraine, enabling the production of drones tested directly in combat conditions, Politico reported on Aug. 30.

The company’s presence in Ukraine for several years serves as a model for combining production and international collaboration, said Olexandr Berezhny, head of Quantum-Systems Ukraine. Drones undergo practical testing on Ukraine’s frontlines, offering insights unattainable in laboratory settings.

The first Vector reconnaissance drones were sent to Ukraine as humanitarian aid in early 2022 during Russia’s full-scale invasion. Over the subsequent three years, Quantum Systems established multiple factories across Ukraine while expanding production in Germany, the United States, and Australia.

The new Vector drone, equipped with artificial intelligence and the WASP acoustic sensor, can “see and hear” enemies, detecting artillery and other weapons from long distances by sound. This system is currently being tested by Ukraine’s Armed Forces’ missile and artillery units to refine range and accuracy.

Berezhny noted that Ukraine’s ability to hire skilled workers makes it an attractive production hub. However, companies like Quantum Systems mitigate risks by distributing production across various Ukrainian locations and collaborating with factories in safer countries.

This strategy has enabled Quantum Systems to increase production from 40 to 80 drones per month at its secret Ukrainian facilities, while its German plants produce 120 drones monthly.

Quantum Systems production

On Aug. 12, 2025, Defense Express reported that Quantum Systems is developing a new carrier drone, Sparta, for Ukraine’s Defense Forces. According to Hartpunkt, serial production of Sparta is slated to begin by the end of 2025, though the initial production volume was not specified.

On July 17, 2025, defense companies Frontline and Quantum Systems finalized one of Ukraine’s largest defense tech investment deals.

The funds will support expanded production capacity and the development of key defense technologies, including Lens bomber drones, Zoom reconnaissance drones (designed to replace Chinese Mavic quadcopters), and the Burya grenade launcher turret.

  1. “Drones undergo practical testing on Ukraine’s frontlines, offering insights unattainable in laboratory settings.”

Ukraine has the newest drones from numerous companies and from numerous countries. I wonder if regular units get them, or specialized ones. Despite certain reports, this should give Ukraine a decisive advantage.
It’s unfortunate that Quantum Systems GmbH is not a publicly traded company. It sounds as if it’s a successful and rapidly expanding company. And the best part, it’s helping Ukraine.
