German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is reportedly preparing a “peace plan” that suggests Ukraine cede territories occupied by Russia, according to BBC News Ukraine, which cites Italian newspaper La Repubblica, on Sept. 9.

The publication claims that Scholz aims to “make history” as a “chancellor of peace” to regain his political standing.

La Repubblica, citing German parliamentary sources, reports that Scholz, along with some party colleagues, is drafting a plan similar to the 2014-2015 Minsk agreements. This plan may involve transferring parts of the occupied Ukrainian territories to Russia.

While Scholz has not commented on this information, he stated in an earlier interview with the German channel ZDF that a second Ukraine peace summit must include Russia. According to the chancellor, his position on this issue aligns with that of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“I believe that now is the time to discuss how we can exit this military situation and achieve peace sooner than seems possible now,” Scholz said.

Zelenskyy’s staff responded to the news. Andriy Yermak, head of the President’s Office, wrote on his Telegram channel that Ukraine will not relinquish its territory.

“Only the Ukrainian Peace Formula, norms of international law, territorial integrity, and sovereignty of Ukraine; this is the only path to justice,” Yermak stated.

The reports also drew a reaction from Moscow. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Russia is willing to consider any proposals but would first like to learn more about Scholz’s initiative, according to the report.
