The vote is a win for Ukraine in its fight to return the illegally annex peninsula
The General Assembly of the United Nations adopted a resolution on December 18, 2019 seeking the protection of human rights in occupied Crimea.
65 representatives voted in favor, with 23 against and 75 abstentions.
The document enters force after voting.
The draft of the resolution was approved on November 14, 2019 by 67 member-states.
According to the statement of the permanent representative of Ukraine in UNGA Oleg Nikolenko, this resolution, together with the resolution on militarization of Crimea, adopted earlier, extend the set of political and diplomatic tools for the restoration of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, he wrote on Facebook.
“Whatever they want in Moscow, the Crimean issue is not closed and will be kept on the international agenda. We have a clear understanding among partners that Russia’s illegal activity in and around the Crimea concerns not only Ukraine’s interests but also their national security. Therefore, the pressure will remain, ” he wrote.
