On the night of June 24, 2026, units of the Ukrainian Defense Forces in the Orenburg region of the Russian Federation struck the Orenburg gas processing plant and the only helium plant in Russia. The distance is more than 1,200 km from the line of combat contact.

As noted, a fire was recorded on the territory of the enterprises. The extent of the damage is being clarified.
What is known about the company?
The Orenburg Gas Processing Plant (GPZ) and the Orenburg Helium Plant (OGZ) form one complex.
- The gasification plant releases purified natural gas and sulfur (which is used, in particular, for the production of explosives and black powder).
- The OGZ takes purified sulfur-free gas and, using the deep cooling method, extracts the most valuable components from it – helium (an inert gas used in liquid-fuel rocket engines and guidance systems) and ethane (which is a key component for raw materials in the synthesis of special plastics, cable insulation for aviation, and key plasticizers for solid rocket fuels and gunpowder).
- Orenburg GPP is one of the largest gas chemical complexes in the world, put into operation in 1974 (built with the participation of foreigners).
