The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry responded to the unwillingness of the Russian Federation, which continues its aggressive war against Ukraine , to discuss the return of occupied territories to Ukraine. As reported by a UNIAN correspondent, Foreign Ministry spokesman Georgy Tykhy said this at a briefing.

In particular, the speaker commented on the statement by the Russian Federation that the occupied regions of Ukraine are allegedly recorded in the Russian constitution and are not subject to negotiations.

In this regard, Tykhyi recalled that 143 UN member states supported the resolution “Territorial integrity of Ukraine: protection of the principles of the UN Charter” in the fall of 2022 and confirmed that no Russian claims to Ukrainian territories are legitimate. These claims have no legal force.

“Therefore, Russia cannot make any territorial claims against Ukraine. Ukraine has internationally recognized borders that have not changed, despite any Russian attempts,” Tykhyy emphasized.

At the same time, as the speaker noted, “it is funny to see” when Russian officials refer to the Russian constitution. Tikhiy emphasized:

“It is this constitution that this regime has torn up and their dictator has been in power for a quarter of a century because, in essence, he has torn up his own constitution.”

He added that Russian officials refer to their constitution when it serves their propaganda narratives.

At the same time, Tikhiy recalled Article 353 of the Russian Criminal Code, which stipulates that planning, preparing or unleashing an aggressive war is punishable by imprisonment for a term of 7 to 15 years, and waging an aggressive war is punishable by up to 20 years of imprisonment.

“If Russian officials want to refer to Russian legislation, I urge them not to be selective,” Tikhiy emphasized.

Statements of the Russian Federation on the occupied Ukrainian territories

As UNIAN reported, Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia does not intend to discuss the status of the occupied Ukrainian territories, which it has already included in its constitution.

Military analyst Alexey Getman believes that the Russians understand perfectly well that during negotiations Ukraine will not give up the entire territory of the Zaporizhzhya, Kherson, Donetsk and Lugansk regions, which allegedly “were included in the new constitution of the Russian Federation.”
