FT: Gazprom Will Not Restore Gas Exports In The Next 10 Years

Potential gas supplies to Asia will not be able to compensate for lost exports to Europe.

Potential gas supplies to Asia will not be able to compensate for lost exports to Europe.

Gazprom is unlikely to be able to restore gas sales lost after 2022 for at least a decade, the Financial Times writes, citing a report prepared for the management of the Russian energy group in late 2023.

According to the study’s forecasts, by 2035 the company’s gas exports to Europe will average 50-75 billion cubic meters per year, which is only a third of the level before 2022.

The company writes in the report that a new gas pipeline to China, Power of Siberia 2, will help partially compensate for lost European export volumes, but its capacity is only 50 billion cubic meters per year, and prices in China are much lower than in Europe, the FT reports. At the same time, an agreement on its construction has not yet been reached.

“The main consequence of the sanctions for Gazprom and the energy industry is a reduction in export volumes, which will not be restored to 2020 levels until 2035,” follows from the document cited by the newspaper.

According to estimates from the Gazprom report, Russian exports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) will grow from 40.8 billion cubic meters in 2020 to 98.8-125.8 billion cubic meters in 2035, and will account for about half of total gas exports, which will increase the influence of NOVATEK, the largest LNG producer in Russia, and other energy companies. The construction of LNG terminals on the east coast of Russia could diversify exports outside China, the FT reports.

The report suggests that the program to produce gas turbines inside Russia will cost at least 100 billion rubles, and will take at least five years, and Gazprom will find it difficult to finance its investment program without a significant increase in revenue. The FT also writes about the dependence of the Russian gas industry on Western-made turbines, which are used to generate electricity, compress and transport gas. The document says that Russian manufacturers have yet to reproduce key components for the production of turbines.

  1. Sounds good to me. But, we’ll see if mafia land and/or gazprom will even exist anymore by then.

  2. Putin the master strategist destroys russia’s best export industry after believing his energy blackmail would work. Any other country, this clown would be removed immediately, instead he doubles down, and proceeds to destroy the next best export industry, military and weapons.

    • Not only that, but the roach population still have confidence in this rat and support his evilness.

        • The French back then hated her for this and beheaded her. The ruskies of today are willing to eat grass if their Führer wants them to.
