French troops are preparing for an intense war in Europe – Politico

Officers are not naming potential enemies, but the exercise is aimed at preparing troops to fight an adversary such as Russia.

French troops are preparing for a high-intensity conflict in Europe against an enemy that can match their firepower. Politico reports this .

Colonel Axel Denis said that the fighting in Ukraine has brought full-scale war back to Europe. He runs a combat training center in Mailly-le-Camp in eastern France. He added that France is preparing for a culture of vigilance as soon as possible.

The publication writes that the conditions for training troops in the combat training center are as close as possible to real battlefields. The sound, heat and light of artillery fire is produced, fake mines are scattered everywhere, and radio communications can be cut off without warning.

The 120 square kilometer camp is unique in France. Its area is larger than the size of Paris and it is the only place where the various units of the French army, namely infantry, armor, artillery and engineers, who are usually scattered throughout the country, can conduct joint exercises. It is also the only place where two dozen Leclerc tanks train all year round.

Officers are not naming potential enemies, but the exercise is aimed at preparing troops to fight an adversary such as Russia.

Macron’s words about sending troops to Ukraine

Last week, Macron announced the theoretical possibility of sending Western armies to Ukraine. The Hill wrote that  with his statement about the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine,  French President Emmanuel Macron probably made a diplomatic mistake. But in the end, this mistake benefited both him and Ukraine.

Later, Macron, at a meeting with parliamentary parties, said that sending troops to Ukraine is possible if the Russian occupiers break through to Kiev or Odessa.

    • Yeah, I’m wondering, too. After two years of very much staying at the sideline of Ukraine supporters, Macron suddenly moves to the front. Why? He’s not an impulsive guy, there must be a reason for that, most probably a political one. What’s the point, really? It’s a good move, sure, but still surprising. 🤔

  1. Unfortunately still mostly hot air until proven differently. In 2023 France spent 1.9% of its national gdp on military, still below the Nato minimum 2.0%. When France starts spending 3.9% of its gdp on its military as does Poland, I will start taking France’s talking seriously.

    • France has a very large economy, much bigger than Poland.
France has the most powerful military in Europe.
Yes, I wished they spent a bit more, but somehow the French army is quite efficient, probably because they produce most of its equipment themselves.

  2. That Macron and France have finally, finally, waken up to the harsh realities on the ground in Ukraine is a very welcome development. Europe has been in a sort of pink bubble slumber regarding mafia land. Business was big and intensive with the trash bin, and every type of crime, aggression, and suppression committed by the crime syndicate was at best taken note of only on the sidelines. Even after the start of the full scale war, the continent, by and large, kept on snoozing.
The early hours of fact finding may have dawned–at least for a few countries–which is finally illuminating the fact that mafia land’s army must be destroyed or that the rat in moscow and his evil system must die.
France must now step up its military aid to Ukraine. This would be a good follow-up after giving birth to its troops on the ground idea.
