French study finds hydroxychloroquine doesn’t help patients with coronavirus

(CNN)A drug that’s been touted by President Donald Trump as a “game changer” didn’t help hospitalized patients with coronavirus and was associated with heart complications, according to a new study.”This provides evidence that hydroxychloroquine does not apparently treat patients with Covid 19,” said Dr. Paul Offit, an infectious disease specialist at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. “Even worse, there were side effects caused by the drug — heart toxicities that required it be discontinued.”

Heart risk concerns mount around use of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine for Covid-19 treatment

Heart risk concerns mount around use of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine for Covid-19 treatmentTrump has said that hydroxychloroquine shows “tremendous promise” and has made it sound like the drug is harmless.”I think it’s going to be great,” Trump said at a White House briefing on March 19.”What do you have to lose? Take it,” he said on April 4.Physicians have warned that while Trump is enthusiastic about the drug, it still needs to be studied to see if it works and if it’s safe.”People can claim what they want, but the proof is in the pudding, and this is the pudding,” Offit said.In the French study, doctors looked back at medical records for 181 patients with Covid-19 who had pneumonia and required supplemental oxygen. About half had taken hydroxychloroquine within 48 hours of being admitted to the hospital, and the other half had not.

Among the 97 patients who did not take the drug, 22.1% went to the ICU or died. The difference was not determined to be statistically differentGet CNN Health’s weekly newsletter

That difference was also not found to be statistically significant.”These results do not support the use of [hydroxychloroquine] in patients hospitalised for documented SARSCoV-2-positive hypoxic pneumonia,” the study authors wrote. The study was published Tuesday on medRxiv.org, a pre-print server founded by Yale University, the journal BMJ and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. • Context is important and I’m glad CNN finally found a doctor to disagree with the other thousands and thousands of doctors that are prescribing HCQ as a……prophylactic…not a cure. Trump said the same thing. I wonder how hard poor CNN worked to find this weak article? Rooting for the disease again, sad.

          • You are inflicted with a disease worse than coronavirus. Nobody except Leftist propaganda outlets say that HCQ is the “cure.” Being hopeful when sick people need it is not bad Knut. And being hopeful that this drug can help is also not bad. Why would you repeat lies about that? Why would you root for the disease? Be careful with karma….

            • It is still under trials in Britain at the moment and anecdotal evidence from American doctors is promising. I certainly wouldn’t write it off yet: especially when used in tandem with lopinavir/ritonavir.

              • Especially when it is PURELY political to root against this medicine that is currently helping people cope with this Chinese plague. Such people that are rooting against medicine because of politics should be ashamed of themselves but TDS patients have proven themselves to be completely detached from reality and humanity. Its going to be a very long 5 more years for them and I will celebrate that. Besides, if Hillary would have won, Ukraine would have next to nothing right now if they even still existed. That’s reality.

  1. Luckily i did not get it. I have diabetes and the risk of a cardiac infarction or brain failure because of sour blood would have been too high.

  2. I thought that the original French trial combined it with lopinavir/ritonavir to make it efficacious?
Anyway, it’s not something to celebrate; it’s very sad if it doesn’t work, because a vaccine is still some way off.

  3. At present, there is a statewide test going in South Dakota. I have not heard anyone claim that chloroquine has no side effects. The French trial said there were some who had side effects, which will happen in any test group. But several have said it was effective in combination with other things, but only seems to be good as a preventive by itself. It has been used by troops for many years to prevent malaria, and is taken by others for Lupus and other conditions. Nothing CNN (AKA Communist news Network) publishes can be trusted. they have been lying about what has said for years now, and have been caught out in every one.

The snotty language used here about Trump is simply a result of the serious disease known as Trump Derangement Syndrome. It is far more serious than Bush derangement Syndrome, from which the media evolved TDS.
