Former commander of Russian troops in Ukraine Surovikin works in Algeria, – Russian media

The former commander of the United Group of Russian troops in the war against Ukraine, General Sergei Surovikin, was sent to work in Algeria. He disappeared from public view after the coup of Yevgeny Prigozhin in the summer of 2023.

This is reported by the publication “Medusa”, reports  Censor.NET .

Russian journalists drew attention to photos from the Russian embassy in Algeria on May 9, where a man wearing glasses resembling Surovikin was present.

The general’s name is not mentioned in the embassy’s statement, but he is referred to by his position – “head of a group of Russian military specialists.”

Surovikin stopped appearing in public after the Prigozhin coup in Russia in the summer of 2023. There were rumors in the media that the general might have known about the coup in advance and was arrested after it. This was not officially confirmed.

Surovikin commanded the joint group of Russian troops in Ukraine from October 2022 to January 2023. In particular, under his leadership, the Russian military retreated from the west bank of the Dnieper River, leaving Kherson. Until August 2023, Surovikin remained the head of the Russian Aerospace Forces.

In February 2025, Viktor Sobolev, a member of the State Duma Defense Committee, said that Surovikin “works as a military advisor” in one of the African countries.
